Energy

  • 80 solar panels were installed on our Lobby roof to provide green energy; all 32 new green buildings are 100% powered by solar energy.
  • All lighting on the property, in all buildings, rooms and in our gardens is 100% LED, resulting in electricity savings of 90%.
  • All air-conditioning units are ultra inverter A/Cs resulting in electricity savings by 60%.
  • 32 energy efficient smart buildings that are insulated to keep the cool in and the heat out.

We are currently working on expanding solar energy to further reduce our reliance on the grid, switching to solar water heaters will significantly cut our water heating carbon footprint and investing in energy storage to save excess solar power and cutting grid reliance.

Water

  • Advanced water filtration system repurposes groundwater, saving over 1,8 million liters annually for irrigation and flushing toilets
  • 30% of the hotel’s water needs met through self-production
  • Using water-saving toilets and water reducers in all showerheads and faucets in all of our casitas
  • Towel and linen reuse program
  • 26% reduction in water consumption in 2024

Ongoing efforts focus on improving wastewater management to minimize environmental impact, optimizing menu offerings to reduce water use in food production, and refining water-efficient practices to further lower emissions.

Waste

  • Plastic Waste: Dispensers, refillable “Join the Pipe” bottles, and mobile keys reduce single-use plastics; recycling is done with Plastic Beach Party.
  • Paper Waste: Digital communication systems minimize printing; cartons recycled via Ecotech.
  • Green Waste: Compostable waste is processed by Fantastic Gardens, diverting 83% from landfill.
  • Food Waste: Guests donate non-perishables to Aruba’s Food Bank; smart inventory prevents overordering.
  • Glass Waste: Bottles are reused or recycled locally through Tropical Bottling.
  • Chemical Waste: Eco-friendly cleaning products, pest control, and pool salt systems replace harsh chemicals.

Taking shape behind the scenes we are expanding our composting efforts and tracking progress, implementing full plastic and glass recycling, extending the program to team members' households. Increasing recycling efficiency to divert more waste and focussing even more on team training & involvement. Learn more.

Green building at Boardwalk Boutique Hotel Aruba

Sustainable Buildings

Today, Boardwalk Hotel consists of 49 casitas and has a strong connection to its location, a historic coconut plantation. Even before the construction phase of a new pool and the 32 additional casitas were completed, Boardwalk invested heavily in the lungs of the property by adding a total of nearly 2300 plants and trees, showcasing Aruba’s unique and diverse flora.

During the construction process, the hotels’ priority was to build as sustainable as possible, while keeping the authentic character of the hotel intact. Insulating materials like Nudura, Insuldeck and Thermochip were used for respectively the walls, floors and roofs of all 32 newly built casitas.

Most local partners involved in the hotel’s construction project worked with these insulating materials for the first time in Aruba, a unique accomplishment in our sustainable construction process. Therefore, as part of the sustainable building practice, a team of international trainers have shared their knowledge with local construction workers.

Biodiversity in our garden

Boardwalk thrives on a lush historic coconut plantation that we cherish. We’ve added 2300 trees and plants that produce 100 tons of oxygen annually and create a sanctuary for our much-loved birds, bees, and butterflies.

The gardens produce approximately 100 tons of oxygen annually and feature botanical signs explaining the origins of the plants. The trees provide natural shade, reducing the need for air conditioning, while offering a sanctuary for birds, bees, and butterflies. We also adopt local trees, giving them a second life in our vibrant gardens.

Arikok National Park Aruba

Protecting nature beyond the hotel

We share Aruba’s culture and landscapes through hand-drawn Treasure Maps, blogs, newsletters, and social content. All highlight local businesses and nature experiences that support sustainability and protect the island’s natural resources.

Our Do-Good Program guides guests toward ways to give back that help care for Aruba’s land and wildlife beyond the hotel grounds.

We also host Barefoot Nature Tours, inviting guests to explore Boardwalk’s lush gardens and nearby protected areas, while learning about native plants, animals, and how to help preserve them.

As part of the Shoco Comunidad, a group of hotels and organizations working to protect Aruba’s endangered national bird we support safe nesting spaces for the native Shoco owl.
