Reducing & recycling waste

Reducing Plastic Waste: Boardwalk Hotel Aruba has implemented several measures to reduce plastic waste:

  • All bathrooms are equipped with in-room dispensers containing locally made Aruba Aloe bath products, eliminating the need for individual plastic soap bottles.

  • Guests receive complimentary “Join the Pipe” water bottles made from recycled sugar cane, and infused water stations along with Aruba’s clean tap water reduce the use of plastic water bottles.

  • Plastic waste is separated and recycled in partnership with Plastic Beach Party, which collects, sorts, shreds, designs, and molds plastic waste into new products in Aruba.

  • Mobile guest keys are used to further reduce plastic waste.

Reducing Paper Waste: An integrated tech stack allows front desk, housekeeping, and maintenance teams to communicate via applications, discouraging the need to print. Carton waste is separated and collected by local partner Ecotech.

Reducing and Using Green Waste:

  • Boardwalk’s garden waste is composted by local partner Fantastic Gardens Aruba, generating approximately 700 kg of compost per year.

  • On-site compost bins collect compostable waste, which is used as fertilizer for the hotel’s gardens.

  • Guest-room compost bins encourage guests to separate their compostable waste. Provided Nespresso coffee pods and teabags are also compostable.

Reducing Food Waste: Guests can donate leftover non-perishable food items to Aruba’s Food Bank, with a donation station located in the lobby.

Reducing Glass Waste: Local glass bottles are returned to their suppliers, and Boardwalk is actively seeking a solution to recycle the hotel’s remaining glassware. The hotel also serves as a collection point for the glassware of team members.

Beyond the hotel: Boardwalk Hotel Aruba educates and trains its team members on the importance of separating waste. Employees are provided with composting bins to collect compostable waste at home, which they can then deposit at one of the compost bins at the hotel. Additionally, team members can bring their rinsed plastic waste to the hotel, where it is collected by the local partner “Plastic Beach Party Aruba,” with Boardwalk covering the recycling costs. The hotel also serves as a collection point for the glassware of team members.
